I ♥ Kevin Cornell: Bearskinrug
Feb 13 2009
You may recognize Kevin Cornell’s work from reading A List Apart. That’s where I first saw his illustrations, and periodically clicked over to his website, Bearskinrug.co.uk. I immediately fell in love with his style.

One of the things I like most about Kevin’s style is his use of ink. It lends a really neat layered effect to many of his illustrations and I particularly enjoy that it’s non-digital. Another one of my favorite things about Kevin’s illustrations is his use of hand-drawn type. I am a huge sucker for hand-drawn type and I often get my fix from checking out Kevin’s stuff.

The image above is from a side project called The Superest, where Kevin, Matthew Sutter, and several guest artists draw competing superheroes. Each one has to out-super the previous hero. It is HILARIOUS. It is also a fantastic display of hand-drawn type. *swoon*
Kevin sometimes draws funny little comics to accompany his blog posts. I took some screenshots of his New Year’s Eve post to feature here because the fat little heads and the dynamic, expressive mouths of these little characters just kill me:

There’s just something about those little sketchy people that just draws me in. The poor posture! The gesturing! The mouths!
The first I heard about The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was through Bearskinrug – Kevin illustrated a graphic novel based on the original F. Scott Fitzgerald story. At the time, it was being turned into a movie starring Brad Pitt, but as movies usually do, it drifted a bit from the original storyline and so Quirkbooks, the publisher, wished to make a story sticking closer to the original and asked Kevin to do the illustration. You can purchase the graphic novel from Amazon.com, if you are so inclined.

If you are like me and enjoy Kevin’s work, Bearskinrug.co.uk has a lovely downloads section, so you can peruse the available wallpapers and do your computer up in style!

I’m so glad you posted about him, because Kevin Cornell is one of my favorite illustrators. His humor and style just strikes a particular chord with me!!
His hand drawn work is like a breath of fresh air in the digital world.
I LOVED the holiday wrapping paper he did for the AIGA called “four clauses” http://www.bearskinrug.co.uk/_downloads/four_clauses/index.php, which was available as a wallpaper, too! yay
