9 Steps to Flip That Site

Dec 09 2008

While watching a slew of home shows one evening I caught on to a pattern – these home makeovers are not far from our digital day-to-day.

So here is my take on a half hour show called: “Flip That Site”.

[Cue the host]
Today’s challenge: Turn this stale brochure site into an Internet user’s paradise.

The siteowners want a fresh look for their outdated www address.
They turn to eROI for some new ideas and the opportunity to control their property.

1. Assemble  team.
The cheery host = the can-do Account Executive
The hip designer = well, the hip Designer
The hunky carpenter = crafty Web Developer

[Account Exec]
The team is ready, let’s flip this site!

2. Clear the clutter
eROI team wades through the current site taking note of unused real estate, overpopulated pages & too much clicking.

[Account Exec]
The team has determined a renovation is in order. How will we bring this site into the 21st century on a 20th century budget?

3. Design the layout
It looks like a simple facelift will not do the job. Goodbye reverse L, hello widgets.

[Account Exec]
The site map is ready… but is the siteowner ready for the change? Let’s find out.

4. Present the comps
Our designer presents and explains the overall site experience.

[Account Exec]
Our designer knocks it out of the park. The siteowner is left wide eyed and speechless. We’re pretty sure they love it… or they are in shock.

5. Revise the layout
On second thought, the siteowner had said they didn’t want that extra photo gallery but now it is a must. And that yellow background that they loved? Get rid of it.

[Account Exec]
We showed our siteowners the ticking clock and suggested it’s time for a final decision. The siteowners agree and approve the design. Let’s move on.

6. Start construction
The site build begins. The pressure is on and time is of the essence.

[Account Exec]
Get out your hard hats because the site is under development. How fast can you say fast turnaround? The big question is, can we keep the siteowners off their laptop long enough to get this baby up?

7. Where’s the flair?
Oops, siteowner forgot to mention part of their dream site included a waterfall animation on the home page.
Bring in the Flash developer for some handy work.

[Account Exec]
We work in the dazzling addition while not disturbing the rest of the layout.

8. The big reveal
The site is complete. We remove the password protection & walk our siteowner through their new digs.

[Account Exec]
We have handed over the logins. Good luck siteowner, we wish you the best.

9. Six months later
We check in with the siteowner and see how they are doing. They love navigating their digital property.

[Account Exec]
How are our happy siteowners?
Thrilled! They have changed everything.

Nice post Julie. I love the home makeover angle because I’m so obsessed with those shows. It’s crazy how similar a site redesign process is to a home makeover. There’s definitely plenty of sites out there that NEED to get ‘flipped.’

I agree that flipping a house is very similar to flipping a site. Clients can’t really change the main frame of a site while in the midst. It’s like building a 2 story house and the client changing their mind to a 1 story. We CAN change it but it will cost ya!
