Changing Pantone Colors to Hex Values

Oct 01 2008

What to do when you request hex values from a client and you receive Pantone colors instead? Never fear! You can convert them using Photoshop.

  1. Drag your Swatches palette out into the open. This will make things easier.
  2. With the palette’s options menu, select “Pantone Solid Coated.” (There are many versions of Pantone colors, but this is a very common one and appears to be what the client was using so that’s what we’re going with.)
  3. Then, again using the options menu, select “Small List.” This will arrange the color chips as a list using the Pantone names and numbers instead of the colors.

  4. Simply scroll to whichever number you need and sample it with the eydropper tool, and then click on the large swatch in the Tools bar to open the Color Picker, and you have your hex value!

Many thanks to Andy from the design team for showing me how to do this in the first place.
