Behaving “Creative.”

In the design profession there are many perks, many ways to express yourself and countless skills to master. On the surface you have the programs you must learn, the hot-keys to memorize, the color theory and yes, even those filters to stay away from. There is much to get excited about, and much self discovery to be had.

On the inside of every Creative, is much more than meets the eye, or at least there should be. There are certain fundamental principals that must be learned. Here are a few I have benefited from…

Self Discipline — Not only is the need to get work done important, the need to get “quality” work done is imperative. The fundamental skills needed are only half the battle when true innovation must be had. Process and methodologies for all creatives is different, but they must be utilized in order to consistently produce meaningful, conceptual work. From painters to designers to architects, the first step is just as important as the last. Find your process, and you cannot fail.

Ego Management — I will keep this one short and sweet. All that an ego does is push people away. Represent your work with respect, treat it like the last book you read. Learn something from your work, and don’t tell anyone…I dare you.

Controlled Learning — Much like self dicipline, the idea that process is important could be taken to another level. Mentally training yourself to think outside the box, push concepts to make small problems big ideas. Continued self discovery, self motivation, self taught process and creative exploration present options in innovation. Surounding yourself with motivating people and places, whether through a book or a walk in the park, brings out thoughts of inspiration otherwise not there. Keep craving knowledge like your a vampire with the thirst.
